Art Portfolio Two: Welcome Post

Hello, I finished my spring break and started my last term at DMUIC and IYZ of Art & Design. This is my introduction to Term Two of Art Portfolio.

After completing my previous project and receiving a mark, I haven't been very satisfied with it. However, reading a tutor's comment helped me to understand what I did wrong. My final result wouldn't have been made by the marking criteria. Unfortunately, I concentrate more on the briefing, than on the actual brief. In this term, I will try to improve this aspect and concentrate on my plan and marketing criteria. Also, I need to improve my time management and research and blog writing. Also I want to improve my skills at ArchiCad and do my new work using the software. In this term I will improve my weak sides to improve my academic practice.

Also, today I received a new project brief, I need to create "Design for a Fashion Outlet to serve the residents of a Progressive and Multicultural district in a modern City. The location is your decision. The outlet should appeal to Generation Y (Millennials) and Generation Z (Zoomers) through its innovative design. The outlet should be accessible, close to public transport and other outlets with a similar focus. The design should have three floors and the store should cater for both men and women," according to my brief, with such criteria:
  • Storefront with large display windows
  • Area for Deliveries/Drop Off ideally at the back of the outlet
  • Men's and women's clothing sections in store, these should be over different floors.
  • Fitting Rooms
  • Checkouts and Tills (including packing area)
  • Offices - administrative/maintenance/security
  • Staffroom - including a kitchen area
  • Staff and Customer toilets (including baby changing/disabled/gender neutral)
Furthermore we did a task in class to try to generate a first idea and have some inspiration. The teacher gave us a bowl with different techniques and made us choose randomly one, and gave us 5 minutes to create some small sketches. At the start, it was something random, but with time, I started to see some style similarity in these small drawings.

My first word was "Repetition" and I remembered an Adidas logo. It contains repetition, but the lines get smaller, so I tried to work with this form.

Next was Right Angle, personally, for me, it associated with a 90-degree angle, mathematics, something brutal, and maybe to make the form more interesting, do it a pyramid shape. So I added to my previous design a minimalistic basic form design. I wanted to create two similar buildings that will be connected with a tunnel, a bridge on every floor. Also do a line design and combine glass with concrete and warm light.

Further word was Swirl, which is absolutely not connected to my previous ideas; however, I thought, what if I add a pyramid form but do soft corners and walls and make it nearly a cone. I like the image that has been created in my head, and I did a small sketch to express my idea.

Next, we exchanged our sketches with our partner and they looked at them, tried to give us some ideas and improvements. My cohort gave me a very interesting idea to do a lower part with concrete and up with glass and add triangular-shaped windows so the Outlet will have more natural sunlight, which is important when people buy clothes. She did a small sketch for me for better understanding.

  1. Okay but which of these do you think you want to develop?

Remember to post the other work from Week 1 - this will be part of your Block One assessment at the end of Week 3!
