Art Portfolio: 3D model practise
Today, I finished my practice 3D model of the bridge. This was a part of skills week lessons. Overall the task was to create a house but with the fact that my project is not a building the teacher allowed me to do a bridge construction. The first part of the lesson for us was introducing the basic materials that architecture use for their construction:
- Plywood/Balsa
- WoodCardboard/Grey board
- Mount Board
- Acetate
- Tracing Paper
- Metal – sheets of copper or aluminium or steel wire to give another
- element to the design
We received an explanation of which material is better used for different parts of construction and also, gave some photos and physical examples.
For this task, been given a sheet of Mount Board that has such properties as:
- Suitable for Study Models
- Either White, Black or Beige, but
- White/Beige is standard
- Can vary in hardness and quality
- Sizes – use between 5mm and
- 1.4mm (1400 microns) for the best results
- Sometimes difficult to cut, without a good quality craft knife
Furthermore, I received a good quality craft knife as a scalpel, a similar one is possibly seen in the image below.
My next step, was to create a sketch with dimensions, I decided to create an easier design of the bridge that would be at the actual outcome, however, I left the main aspects as different types of curves that I have in the actual design. The main purpose of this work was to try the material, practise different cutting techniques to understand which of them is comfortable and be able to look for another way if something is not comfortable before doing a final 3D model.
In the image below possible to see my sketch with dimensions (cm)
The hardest part for me was to cut a fence for a top arch and, glue it. For gluing, I used standard PVA glue but I mixed it with a small amount of water so the liquid impregnates the paper and sticks better. All other cutting processes went good and without any nuances. Below possible to see my final outcome of the 3D practice model.

Good you have added your model practice and process well done
